About NHS Music Program
The New Horizons Schoolmusic program will encourage every student to express themselves through performance. We will be learning musical content by listening, singing, moving, reading and writing notation and of course, playing instruments. We will be having an intense amount of fun and have an intense amount of insight into music through meaningful engaging activities! Students in the program will learn how musical elements, like expression, come together to change feeling and mood in music. Through the enjoyment of a variety of music genres, the students will be inspired as to the many ways that music can enrich one’s life.
5Dear Parents and Guardians,
My name is Kandace Graham and I am going to be teaching your wonderful children music this year at New Horizons School. I’m sure that some of your children have been coming home with the buzz of all the exciting things that the Music Program is up to this year. I am very excited to be part of giving your child(ren) the best music experience possible!
I will be providing 5 different extracurricular programs to your children. I am hoping to be starting both programs as soon as possible. I am planning to be holding a junior choir (grades 2-4) and senior choir (grades 5-9) once a week at lunch recess time (Monday and Tuesday respectively). I will also be holding ukulele club (Wednesdays’s at Lunch Recess). There will also be HONORS choir new this year happening after school on Wednesdays (excluding early out days) from 3:15-4:15. Finally, there is Beats and Eats and Drama Club alternating on Thursdays at lunch recess. Please see Miss Grahams Calendar for dates and times. All programs are starting immediately. These are all great opportunities for your children to learn the gift of music, and be included in something awesome! I feel lucky to be a part of this experience for them. The only limitation I have is that at the moment, I have limited instruments. So, it is on a first come, first serve basis. If there is more interest in the programs, I will talk to the powers-at-be :) .
In the event that you wish to purchase your child their own instruments, I have outlined the cost of some classroom instruments. Every grade 4, 5, and 6 student will need their own recorder and case this year so I can train them for the opportunities to come.
*recorder: $5-$10 purchased at a music store which I have provided information on below).
*ukulele: $40+(below are some different websites to different music stores around Edmonton where you can purchase one-I got one of mine on Amazon)
*There are some at the dollar store but the sound quality has been very poor in my experience, so for my sanity and yours, please stay away from them*
All of the following places have instruments that you can purchase. I encourage shopping around because prices vary.

Also, I’m encouraging my students to perform regularly. About every three/four weeks there will be a performance day! Any student that has worked and prepared a performance is encouraged to perform on these performance days in front of their class. In the spring, we will be holding: New Horizons Got Talent. This MUSIC FAIR will be a great opportunity for any and all students to showcase some of the musical skills they have prepared and learned throughout the year. I’m hoping to be taking some of the students to share their gifts and perform in different community centres around Sherwood Park.
I am so excited to be a part of the school community and cannot wait to inspire and be inspired by all of the fun things that are going to be happening this coming up year with your child.
MOST IMPORTANT!!!!:
We can’t have the type of AWESOME music experience/program that I am envisioning without help from PARENT VOLUNTEERS!! There is a place in the google form linked below to sign up to help make this year the best, most musical year that New Horizons has seen in a long time!! Knowing certain things about your child’s musical background and interests can help me to achieve this! Please take the time to fill out this google form to help me get the information I need. It should only take a few minutes.
